I'm in the process of porting and polishing a good used 8V head to replace my worn 82T 8V. I've also dipped into doing some valve seat lapping. The lapping was necessary to clean up the mating surfaces which indicated some rust. In anticipation of needing to adjust the valve clearances to spec I've done some preliminary measurements of each stock shim with a micrometer. The results raised my curiosity about the Trollhatten manufacturing process, or perhaps dealership servicing.

The measurments of each shim starting from cylinder # 1 (back of engine)to #4 (front), e=exhaust, i=intake, all measurements are in metric:
e2.43, i2.49, i2.67, e2.47, e2.47, i2.49, i2.49, e2.47

Mind you, I didn't take valve clearance measurements prior to disassembling the head so I have no way of knowing if the clearances were within spec. Still, as you can see, the exhaust shim for cylinder #1 and the intake shim for cyl #2 are different compared with the remaining pattern of shims. I'm guessing that at the manufacturing plant each head is constructed with a stock set of matching shims. When the head is initially assembled, is there a subsequent measurement and readjustment before it's final attachment to the engine? Or perhaps after a 1000 mile break-in period at a dealership? Is valve clearance adjustment a common dealer maintenance proceedure? That would account for the differences.

Yes, the clearances will be within spec when all is reassembled.
