1) Prepare. You need ratchets, strong and good crescent wrenches, a scribe, a metal chissel, and a retainer ring removal tool. Also need murotic acid, also known as HCL or Hydrochloric Acid.
2) Before disassembly, take a dremmel or a scribe or a chissel and clearly and deeply mark everything with a straight line on one side, from intake to exhause sides. This is VITAL for re-assembly, because these things will fit together in 360 degree manner, so you need to make sure you have a way of identifying which way is correct.
3) removing the exhaust side from the center section requires patience. Loosen all the bolts, but you will see that 2 can't be removed because they hit on metal. Open as much as possible, then use a tough screwdriver or chissel to lever the 2 pieces apart. A hammer to the chissel helps with stubborn ones. As the thing pulls apart, open the bolts more and lever the stuff apart more until you are done.
4) THIS IS A BALANCED UNIT! You MUST MUST MUST mark the fans on either end so that they line up on re-asembly. I marked the low side fan and the bolt where they lined up. I used a chissel to make a noticeable nick on each. IMPORTANT!!! Did I mention how vital this step is? Using a marker is not good, as this will wipe off. The reason these turbos wear out after rebuild is no paid attention to the ballancing before the rebuild. This will ensure proper ballance and long life.
5) Remove the ony the outer 2 retainer rings. Then remove the copper bearings. Leave the inner retainer rings as they are not in your way and they are steel so they will survive the acid bath (next step). Then soak anything that is not brass or aluminum or copper overnight in the murotic acid, except the impeller fans. Use a dremmel and a carpenter's knife to clean out all the grooves. DO NOT use the knife to clean bearings or smooth edges that act as bearings. You don't want to risk scoring them.
Davenew also gave important tips and pointers above. After the acid bath, clean ALL ports and channels like he says. Then wash again and let dry before proceding.
Use pre-lube and high temp grease were instructions say so. Do not just start the car. Pull the coil wire off, then crank car for 30 seconds. Replace the main coil wire and start the car. This will pre-lube the turbo so you don't score the bearings your first time out.
