I drive until the low fuel light comes on, then fill it up within the next 20-50 miles. Usually takes 14 gallons to fill it, the most I've ever had to put in is 15.5 gallons. Not sure what the capacity is on my '88.
I'd be wary of consistently running the level too low...I feel it affects the longevity of the electric fuel pump. Sucking air, running it dry, and trying to get that last bit of gas out of the tank, which may contain more dirt, water, or impurities, can't be good for the system. Just my opinion. And it may take several gallons to reprime the pump after it has run dry.
