worn bushings on the anti-sway bar. I've had a clunking sound on the front end of my '86 turbo for years. I heard it driving over bumbs as a slight rattle - thought maybe it was my bumper. It wasn't the bumber. I consistently heard it as I backed out of parking spaces and it felt as if my control arms were shifting forward on bad A-arm bushings. It wasn't the A-arms. For years my mechanics would tell me that it was just the brake pads or calipers and that very little could be done short of swapping out the caliper. No thank you - I know it's not that either.
One day I had the car up on the lift and as I leaned forward to look at something I grabbed the antisway bar for support and lo and behold it moved. I grabbed it and shook it and sure enough it moved just enough to sound like the noise I've been looking for. The bushings on the sway bar need to be replaced.
That's my experience on an '86 900 turbo with 175k miles. I've never had a problem with the calipers DESPITE what my mechanics have always told me. Hope this helps.
