Welcome to Saabnet.

if you take off the cat. converter on an 88 spg and direct pipe to muffler

#1 you will cut your power - No.
#2 you will mess up the way your o2 works - No.
#3 your car will run crappy - No.

But, you will likely not benefit from its removal, and it is ILLEGAL to do so anyway. To increase your car's power, first go to the performance board and start reading old posts on c900 tuning.

Here are some search words to get you started:

tweak (learn about increasing boost)
MSD (learn about timing changes)
AID (learn about timing changes)
resistor mod (learn about changing injector size)
24 pound (also 24#, 24 lb) (learn about changing injector size)
30 pound (learn about increasing boost)
downpipe (learn about aftermarket dowpipes)
JT (learn about aftermarket downpipes)
FMIC (learn about front mount intercoolers)
Aquamist (learn about water injection)

"Hey, c'mon, cheer up - there's plenty you can do to hop up your 'vert! Just get yourself some resistors from Radio Shack and tweak your APC. With my new Dremel, I can help you grind down the stop on your vacuum advance capsule for better timing, and I'll bet we can find a 3 bar fuel pressure regulator from an N/A motor at the junkyard. And if that's not enough, we'll get some bigger injectors off Ebay, put a resistor in at your air mass meter, and go go Go! Whadya say, huh? Let's do it; just us two girls, some tools, and some beers, 'kay?"
