I did not have to mess with a skid plte on my automatic. I put the jack near the rear of the trans.
One hint that will make your life easier, when trying to align those 2 bolts for the engine mount(when re-installing ). Townsend recommends loosening the motor mount bolts. One of mine was frozen. I used a combination of a jack, and my body weight on the fender. It was the body weight trick that finally got the bolts alined. took 2 seconds after that.
as far as the TDC, you should be able to estimate by where the mark is on the cover. Basically, it is the highest part of the circle the flywheel turns in. Right in the middle. Use the cam marks, and the sprocket marks (on the rear of the sprockets) sprocket marks should be at 90º to the head surface. You may have to rotate the crank twice to get all the marks to line up.
Another thing I didwas to put different color plastic tie-wraps on the EXACT link of the timing chain that aligned with the sprocet mark on each cam. I did not want to be off by a tooth.
