I have a $10 basement support pole. It is two steel pipes w/ 1 inch holes and a pin so it can be set at mostly any specific length. Using that and a hydraulic jack, take your new pressure plate to the basement and use the jack & pole to press down on the fingers, at which point you can insert the 6 or 8 gauge solid copper wire to keep it sprung. Then re-install the sucker & you're in fat city.
