The amount of vertical movement will depend on how hard you push, and the position of the cams. There is tension from the valve springs, and that varies a little depending on where in the cam rotation you are. Unless there is massive slop, I wouldn't use that as a great measure.
The best measure is to turn the engine to TDC for cylidner #1 and check the alignment marks on the cams against the marks on the cam bearing blocks. If the marks line up pretty good, then the chain isn't badly worn. The other method is to visually inspect the chain and sprockets. A worn chain will look, well, worn. And the chain won't wear without some wear on the sprockets.
If the marks line up pretty well, and the engine is quiet at idle, I'd say your chain and guides are in great shape. Noise doesn't always indicate a bad chain - I've had cars that have been clattering for 50K miles, but the marks line up just fine and the chains aren't worn. Saab engines tend to be noisy - lazy hydraulic valve lifters, clacking fuel injectors, and worn chain guides. None of those are particularly bad, and replacing the chain won't fix them.
Good luck!
