O2 Sensor wires melting and Engine smoking!!!

86 SPG - I think I really screwed up this time... In attempt to hook up my air/fuel mixture gauge, I put the wire in between the connection from the 02 sensor to the car, the black one with the 2 white wires...Well the first time I did it, I only had the wire crimped on one side of the sensor, and it wasnt registering anything, so I tried having the wire go to both, and when I started it, smoke started rising from the engine block and from the little hole underneath the connection...Also, the wires from the 02 sensor melted their insulation and I cant get the connection apart...I need some advice! im in deep this time I think...
