For a few months now I occasionaly have this burning/metallic smell coming in through my vents. I took it to the Saab dealer and told them that I had this smell and thought maybe it was the harmonic balancer (I read that can create a burning smell). They said that the harmonic balancer was fine and they didn't give me any other suggestions.
Winter has set in and every time I start my car in the morning the battery light would stay on a little longer every morning until one day on the way to work it wouldln't go off. After work I started the car started to drive and the alt. light went off then on the off + burning smell. So when I got home I opened the hood and antifreeze was everywhere! I noticed that one of the hoses on the reservoir had worked itself loose. I replaced the alternator cuz it was fried from the antifreeze.
So I pick up my car and mention the burning smell to the mechanic and he said that an alternator doesn't do that and he also didn't offer and suggestions. So I drive the car home runs great but the burning smell is still there.... then on the way home from work the following day I started hearing another noise... I can tell it is one of the pulleys. When I push on the gas the sound become a little more apparent but I don't know what it is. Today on the way to the gym the car temp got pretty hot and I shut the car off before it got to the red line....I was reading on this message board and someone mentioned the water pump making a burning smell.
Is it the water pump????? I am not noticing any smoke out of the exhaust or anti in the oil or vice versa so I don't think I have blown a head gasket.
If it is the water pump do you suggest replacing it myself or have the dealer do it. I have worked on my Saab before. I have replace the heater valve and exhaust. But I don't know how hard this is. Any help or suggestions would be VERY helpful
Thanks Robert
