Okay, so I decided to change my ATF fluid and filter today. Shouldn't be too much of a problem, right? WRONG!

Step 1: Remove the skid plate that covers the ATF pan. Three out of 4 bolts removed easily. The 4th bolt wasn't a bolt. The left-rear bolt was a philips-head bolt mounted on the top and a nut on the bottom, looked like a long license-plate bolt. The head was round, so I had to grab it really tight with pliers while I got the bottom nut off. Pain in the ass.

Step 2: Remove the drain plug. But my drain plug isn't a hex head. It's a slotted bolt. The head is the size of a quarter, with a really long slot. But it's not budging. Looks like loc-tite was used on it. Can't get any grip on the head, and my screwdrivers keep slipping out. Bent two high-quality screw drivers, still not budging.

Step 3: Forget the plug, just remove the pan. Took out all the screws holding pan. It turns out that the frame that the screws go through is in two pieces. Is this normal, or did mine break? I have to pieces with a break in the front-right and back left corner, so I basically have two "L" pieces.

Step 4: Remove the pan. Not too hard. I notice that the previous pan gasket was put on with gasket sealer. Looked nothing like the new gasket that I have.

Step 5: Remove the ATF filter. Driver side is attached with a slotted screw. Easily removed. Passenger side attached with a hex-head. Can't get to it. Have to remove the clip and aluminum tube that goes into the next chamber. Removed hex-head. Filter snags on rods. Finally comes out.

The process of putting it all back together was easier, but I didn't expect this much trouble with removing everything. Every step had problems. Why the heck would a mechanic put loc-tite on the drain plug? Once the pan was off, I still couldn't remove the drain plug. Any ideas? Is this a normal experience?
