they're the same stuff but they remain separate as far as engine oil from tranny oil. as far as an oil additive, i'd be very cautious. the transmission is very particular about what you put into it an additive may be a short term fix, but I imagine there'd be nothing but trouble in the long term, including very stiff shifts in cold weather, if cold weather exists where you are, and maybe even premature trans failure due to pinion bearing or something. there's a reason that saab doesn't reccomend the typical 85 weight gear oil in the transmissions. anything much thicker than 10w-30 is bound to cause problems (ask me how i know), and those additives usually have some thickening agent to seal up leaks.
