I think that was an excellent analysis of the question, Greg. I agree with your bottom line recommendation too, certainly that no more than "S" speed rated tires be fitted for softest ride. However, your line regarding no standardization in sizes between mfg's is absolutely correct, and it is a PITA, indeed. I have been carrying a tape measure to tire dealers for years, for measurement of diameter, cross-section, and tire patch width, for all my cars, and it has paid off. The same size in diff mfgs can vary widely in dimensions. Another tip for everyone: the dealer's book has all the dimensions for each tire they stock, if they will let you see it.
