the brushes are part of the voltage regulator assembly and the voltage regulator assembly is easy to replace. It lists for $80 or so but is widely available at discount (genuine Bosch number) or indie part stores.
New brushes can be soldered into the ¿ld voltage regulator. It took me about 45minutes the first time I tried it...I could probably do it in 5-10 minutes if I had t¿ do it again. To do it quickly I would use a Dremel tool with a small cutter (getting the old ones out was the long pole in the tent). You need a soldering gun or relatively large iron (150watts or more iron...I used a 425watt soldering gun) and a pair of relatively strong needle nose pliers to install the brush/pigtail.
Last time I installed a Bosch regulator I used an IPD variable voltage regulator and set it at 14.2v. Big difference in lights and general performance.
