I didnt read if you have an aftermarket head unit. First if you have the original you will have to go to Radio shack and get a speaker choke thing. You cannot amp up an amped up signel so you have to bring it back to low power. Then you can go into all the amps you want and do exactly what you say. Re wire your speakers from the head unit to the amp and also to the sub. The easist thing by far tho is to get a $100 head, like my Sony CD 200 w unit, which has pre outs and I went to the amp for the sub and drive my speakers with 50w each from the head. take the 400w and dirve the sub and you will have control and kick ass. I have 1000w driving 2 10" subs but I have a convertable and I like it loud with the top down. I also had to add "Speaher Saveers" to the two front speakers cause I keep blowing them out....well my kids did. now its perfection. go for it.
