High Idle & Timing

Two years ago I purchased a 1988 900S 5-speed NA. It was a basket case and after replacing the transmission, ball joints and various other components I figured I had a decent around town vehicle. However, I could not get the idle below 1200 rpm. Much to my embarrasement the Saab dealer simply set the timing and it idled correctly. Recently though, the idle started to creep up and againg it would not idle below 1200 except when it was started warm, but after driving a few blocks it would again idle at 1200rpm. I checked the TPS, AIC valve and checked for all the normal vacuum leaks and still the idle would not drop below 1200rpm. Finally, a light when on and I checked the timing. Problem was, I cannot locate the timing marks on the flywheel. All I could find was a raised pin on the flywheel with no idicators on either side of it. I rotated the flywheel through 360 degrees and the only mark is this raised pin. Has anyone else came across this? I rotated the distributor just a bit and the idle returned to 850rpm. It seems very unusual for the timing to increase on its own. Also, I cannot locate this pin with my timing light even though I have painted it white. When I remove the distributor cap the pin lines up with #1 cylinder (more or less). I figure I am close to the correct timing since the engine idles great but is it normal not to have to increase the idle with the adjusting screw by the throttle? The adjusting screw is completely backed off. I am curious but also a little confused. Sorry for the long post but the timing was the last thing I expected to be off since it was set less than 10,000 miles ago and after reading several posts on high idle timing was never mentioned as a possibility for the excessive idle-Dave
