I think we've found the problem. I seem to recall that wheels from late-model 99's (1978+) bolt directly onto c900's up to 1987, but that earlier 99's didn't quite fit. For a more detailed explanation, try posting on the "other models" bulletin board.
I'm fairly certain that you can have the centers bored out without incident.
