Hi Peter,
just took off my 83 turbo unit last week, and i'm a total rookie. I would suggest just focus on the 3 nuts on the outside of the exhaust manifold elbow - for now you don't need to undo the ones closer to the turbo. Take them off when the whole unit is on the bench.
for the one nut on the inside of the elbow, if you can't get it off, i ended up leaving that nut on,and the unit slid out the other side of the stud after i took the 'inside' nut off. Oh, i had to apply some pressure (ie hammer) to the turbo to create a gap between the regulator and the housing in order to get a wedge in and pry the turbo loose.
I assume you've got the oil lines and the vacuum bracket undone already?
