well, it's not my alternator

Hi all,
A question on an electrical problem - 1991 900s.
During a real cold snap a few months ago I had some electrical problems. The car had been running for less than five minutes when the voltage light came on, the car started running rough, then stalled out. After about a half hour I got it running (rough) and nursed it home and left it alone until the warm weather came.
I've since replaced the battery (it was old), I checked the tension on the alternator (fine), and I've had the alternator bench-tested (it tested fine), but the problem remains:
I drive the car for a little while and the voltage light starts coming on.
What else should I look for?
I think I remember hearing that a bad ground is a likely suspect after the alternator for this sort of thing, but I'm not sure how I'd go about checking it.
Any ideas/advice appreciated.
Isaac
