You could pull the plugs. Any of them that are really clean usually means you are burning coolant in that cylinder. Does your car sputter anytime right after startup? Also comes from coolant burning off in one or more cylinders. Does the temp stay OK when at speed but immediatley shoot up when stopped in traffic?
I have a '94T-conv. that had no signs other than the temp rising quickly when stopped. I didn't know as much about cars a few years ago as I do now (not that I'm an expert by any stretch) and I knew that wasn't right but I thought that it was because it is a turbo and has an automatic trans hence it produces more heat. Well, dummy I am....the head gasket went in dramatic fashion one evening. Complete failure, every drop of coolant that didn't go up in steam was in the block. Point of this story is that the car performed well and showed no other signs of a bad head gasket besides the temp thing.
So....from reading your original post and your temp problems I would be suspicious of the head gasket. Have it checked before you spend a bunch replacing components that aren't bad like a radiator, etc.
Best of luck,
Todd
