If you hooked up the spark plug wires wrong, by definition you've got at least two wrong (unless you have some left over). If you could even get it running like that, which I doubt, it would bang and crash like a tin can of silverware going down stairs, and wouldn't give you an idle you could use a timing light on.
First off, I'd check all my hoses. If you tried to start the car with the plugs wired wrong, you might have fired a cylinder with the intake valves still open. This could blow a hose off. Maybe, just maybe, damage a fuel injector.
Need lots more info about how it's running. It sounds like the car idles fine, it just doesn't have any power. Does the engine rev OK without a load? Is it just under load that it doesn't have power?
The wiring that lets the engine idle is the right one, simply because it idles. Let it run a few seconds, then shut the engine down and pull the plugs. Are any gas wet? If so, that may be a misfiring cylinder, either due to a bad plug, spark plug wire, or cap. How can the cap be bad if it's new? It can. You can always go back to the old cap to check.
I'm surprise you changed the cap but not the rotor. I've never seen a cap wear out, but the rotor still be fine. For the few extra $$, I always replace the rotor with the cap.
