Rob,
Unfortunately, I've just rebuilt mine for the SECOND TIME in 17 months!! grrrr.
Here's my advice: I consider myself very competent in most things Saab 900. Pulling the powerplant unit and seperating the trans is pretty straighforward.
Dismantelling isn't too bad but in order to replace all the bearings you'll need a press and some factory tools.
Assembly is another matter. Unless you're some kind of gearbox genius I would strongly suggest you find someone that has experience and get them to help you. You need to measure tollerances very carefully and there are subtleties to replacing various parts. I'm told there were quite a number of similar looking yet incompatible gears - something to be very careful of. You'll also need special tools here to press in the new bearings and a few other things. As I understand the best manual to have is the factory one which shouldn't cost more than about $20 (just get the specific manual transmission section).
That being said, if you can find someone who knows these gearboxes and the right tools you can save quite a few hundred dollars. (My first complete rebuild cost about $600, my most recent one only about $300.) Incidentally, the second rebuild came 17 months and about 32k miles later. The Primary case lower bearing (mainshaft bearing) failed (87-00-767) for some reason - we can't quite figure out why - and chewed up a few other parts in the process.
Other than that, I hear the Erikson gearboxes are pretty good.
