In the US the octane posted on the pump is calculated
by the R+M/2 method. R= RON octane rating (probably
the one you see posted in Holland), M= motor octane
rating. They are just two different methods to calculate
or test the octane rating.
We used to have the RON octane posted on the pumps many
years ago but in the early to mid 1970's the new method
was implemented due to inconsistent results.
The RON method of calculating octane always gives a higher
rating than the Motor test method. R+M/2 is the average
of the two ratings.
So the 95 or 98 RON number is probably lower octane than
the gasoline rated at 93 via the R+M/2 method.
