...just to refresh, it has 108k miles, orig owner, etc....Talladega Red.
On to the test drive today:
Actually my bro test drove it, and I rode. He said the tranny shifted smoothly (original transmission). Engine felt strong.
What I noticed w/ the engine though was a "whine" sound, as it ran, and drove....so all the time. Kind of like that power-steering sound, if you know what I mean. The owner said that thats how the engine sounds, and its always been that way. Is this normal on these cars? I have a '99 9-3, so I don't know how the classic 900s are "supposed" to sound.
To me, the idle seemed a tad rough. Not rough where it shook the car though...but I could hear it fluctuating just a little bit. Perhaps I am used to my '99 9-3. How should a 90 SPG idle?
He said he had one side redone, as a "crease" was put down the side he said. I looked under the hood, the fender welds seemed fine.
Typical 13 year old car dings here and there, but overall looked good for a '90 car. I noticed one small rust bubble forming on the right rear wheel well, right above the wheel well flare. Also noted a few cracks in the paint in this spot. The owner said he bumped a pole or something there, very slightly. I assume this cracked the paint, and a little rust bubble formed. I felt under the wheel wells w/ my hands and didn't really feel any rust or bondo, etc. Should I really worry about this? How can this be fixed?
Other things....power antenna doesn't work, how much does that go for?
Interior seemed nice, no dash cracks, headliner just redone....leather has the expected wear, but no cracks or tears. Sunroof worked. He said AC was 'so-so'....but that its always been this way. IE, he feels SAAB AC has never been that great, and not that the AC has degraded over time.
Any advice?
We agreed to a price of $3000 (PENDING AN INSPECTION BY OUR SAAB INDY).
My main concerns are the whine from the engine......and that rust bubble on the right rear wheel arch.
This car is for my brother to commute to college in, 30 min each way. The alternative would be to lease him a newer car, or buy a slightly used car, maybe 3 years old or so. So..the issue of repair costs is not a big deal, as they would still be likely lower than car payments, and we have a local Indy. The question is, will this be a car that can be depended on to get my brother to school on time every day and not strand him?
How much will my indy be able to determine about the car in a 45 min to 1 hour inspection?
Any advice is appreciated.
