Blown transmission?

Here' what happened. I have an 85 900T with an 88 engine and tranny. I was powering up to get to freeway speed in 4th gear when I suddenly heard a loud pop. the car bucked and acted funny for a moment. I tried to shift into fifth gear. After grinding the life out of the transmission, I finally found 5th. After that, I could drive like normal, as long as I was in a gear. Acceleration was not a problem except for a serious grinding/knocking noise that gradually went away the longer I drove the car. I can find all the gears, but only after a liberal search through the shifter. And the gearbox feels extremely sloppy now. Needless to say, the car is now parked for fear of extensive damage and becoming stranded. What happened? Is a transmission overhaul in order? If so, whats the least expensive route to getting the car back on the road? Thanx in advance for any help!
