Change Voltage Reg. or Brushes??

My alternator died on me today. I was kinda upset cause the charging light never came on to warn me. Anyway, I am excited to rebuild the alternator.
Once I have it apart I am wondering if I should just replace the whole voltage regulator or if I should cheap out and just get brushes? Are voltage regulators usually solid?
And can anyone clue me in one why the charge light never turned on?
Thanks guys!
