At least one set of pads had no "backing plates," by which I mean thin metal plates shaped like the brake pad backer. On the set that did have these, I put the goop on the brake pad backing, placed the backing plate against the goop and installed the assembly. The backing plate made a metal-to-metal contact against the brake piston.
On the other set, where I did not find a thin backing plate, I was reluctant to apply goop, lest it impair caliper piston function (as described in first post).
