There are a number of things that could be causing your problem. Since you call yourself a mechanical neophyte, I hope that means that you are truly just "starting" to be a mechanic. Do the job - learn how to work on this thing and it will give you many years of pleasure. Run to the shop with every little problem and it will eat you alive! Tools and manuals will always be cheaper than shop rates.
First thing to do is go and buy a Bentley manual. Next, you might check the following things:
1. Spark Plugs. Look in your book and find out the proper NGK plugs your car should have in them. If they are more than a couple of years old, change them anyway. I had a similar problem some years back with my 1987 900S. Changing the relatively new Champions to the proper NGK plugs (even though I had to special order them through my parts store) ended up fixing the problem. The computers that run the engine look for a particular resistance through the spark plug. If it is off, it starts changing things.
2. Look for loose or cracked vacuum hoses. Examine the entire intake manifold.
3. Take off the rubber intake bellows and spray some carburretor cleaner on the throtte plate and throttle body. Get it good and clean.
4. You said your mechanic cleaned the idle "motor." Assuming you mean the AIC valve, that would be an obvious thing to double check. Take off the hoses to it and make sure it is really clean. That is actually the part that controls idle speed. Perhaps it's faulty? See number 5 below.
5. Your fuel injection system should be the Bosch 2.4, which has a really nifty way of allowing you to check each of the fuel injection components in turn to make sure they are all working. (this includes the AIC valve)Bentley has a very nice description of this process. All you need is a simple on/off switch and some wire with alligator clips.
6. Check the spark plug wires for cracks, and make sure they are a good brand. Bougicords are some of the best. See "Spark Plugs" above for reasoning.
7. Once you get your new Bentley manual, it will have some other suggestions for you to look at as well. Good luck!
