Radio replacement -- huh?

For the first time ever I am voluntarily replacing a radio. I finally decided it was time to move beyond cassettes.
So, I have a cheap Aiwa head unit which I need to remove from my '84 dashboard. I can't for the life of me figure out how to get it out nondestructively. Here's the scene:
The faceplate is off. The bezel is off. Now I'm staring at the plastic inner front panel. The front flange of the metal jacket/cage is showing around the plastic panel. The radio is not free to move within the cage (though I can jiggle it by a millimeter or so). How the %@^#$ am I supposed to get the radio out? There are no apparent keyholes, and shining a flashlight down the little gap between the radio and the cage I don't see any little tabs to push out of the way. There are three screws on the inner front panel, but removing them does not appear to liberate any components.
Thieves have graciously performed this operation for me on my previous radios. What's their secret?
