How much gas in the tank? When my primer pump (the smaller pump in the fuel pump assembly) went up, the car would "run out" of gas at about a 1/4 tank. The car ran fine with more gas in it. I got a good primer pump at the junkyard (30 minutes, $15).
But, since your fuel pressure leaks down quickly, I'm not sure this applies. My FPR blew once, stranding me. It leaked gas into the intake manifold through the vacuum hose. You should smell gas around the motor if that's the problem.
