thx for that. re checking lands, i've been told to clean out the lands completely, then using an old ring, check for slack between ring and end of land. was told using old ring is ok because they don't wear in thickness, just across cyl. edge. is that reasonable? it is to me.
There is only 4 thou taper on the walls, well within spec of i believe 8 thou. AFter cleaning it myself, taking block to machinist to check everything over and get honed if all is well.
Did i tell you i hooked up with a fellow from work who built diesel generator engines for a number of years? he came over and went over things with me, checked crank endfloat, cyl taper, piston wristpins, and felt all was well on original pistons, pistons just needed cleaning and to check lands. Said not to glass bead pistons under any circumstances . Also said not to get block hot tanked, rather clean it myself. how does that compare to your experience? He also said not to get crank ground unless abs. necessary. just clean with emery cloth. there was no wear on the journals when checked by scraping his fingernail across main journals.
what if anything do you use for engine paint (stripping, and new paint) as the red is worn on one side of block.
i am leaning towards the E Europarts due to much better cost, as anything is better than what i had. the bearings were all quite worn. he said good thing the HG went when it did....
thanks,
Wayne
