Adding to burlyb's comments:
There are these ways of getting a new tranny into your car:
1. Replace yous with a rebuilt unit.
2. rebuild your unit.
3. install a used unit.
4. buy another Saab with a recemntly replaced tranny.
DIY rebuilding is possible, and requires some patience and particular tools.
If installing a unit that someone rebuilt (cases 1 & 2) shop around not only for price, but check references, ideally for people who've been road testing theirs for a couple of years. also consider their rebuilding and parts replacement practices (you want good parts).
I would shy away from using used units. I pulled one from a yard - low mileage car that was wrecked, and the pinion was just as shot as my own. However, if you can get a used unit from a case where someone just had a rebuilt installed when the car was totaled - well - that can work. My personal opinion is that most trannies in junkers have been driven too hard.
