No disagreement with what chrisx says.
See what you can learn about the core by talking. If the owner says "yeah, me and Ray drove this thing for two years and geeez did it whine. 18 months ago we stopped getting it into fifth so we just revved it down the highway. Then we couldn't get into 4th anymore and we though we might break something redlining it in 3rd all the time." Walk away from that one.
If you can disassemble a little bit:
take the side cover off and look at gears (esp reverse and 1st), turning them so you can see the teeth and chipped teeth. Takes a flashlight.
If you can remove the differential (give the guy a six pack of talls and tell him to go to lunch!), look at the pinion gear and its mate for excessive wear. Grab the pinion gear and push and pull it. Any slop? there shouldn't be, but there probably is. the more axial play, the worse that 4th gear and the 5th synchro hub (am I remembering right) got pounded, and those are $200 parts.
I wouldn't worry about the lay shaft. Its probably worn, and even if it is, its a $60 part - the least of potential troubles.
