What country are you in? That will make a difference as far as the version of the fuel injection ECU you are using. My understanding is that European markets kept using the LH 2.2 ECUs up into the '90s. If it's an LH 2.2, it doesn't store codes like the US-spec LH 2.4 ECUs. Other than that, the problem sources are pretty much the same.
Cleaning the grounds on the head is a good thing to do on general principles, but I don't think that it would cause rich running. If anything, it would make injector opening weak because a bad ground would have more electrical resistance - it would run unevenly and run lean.
A bad FPR wouldn't necessarily leak fuel through the vacuum hose, but that is one of the failure modes. If you have a spare FPR, try installing it and see what happens. After 15 years, it's easily possible that the spring in the FPR could be weakened or its other internal parts have worn.
There are a couple of other possibilities that come to mind that could make it run rich:
- NTC sensor is bad. This sensor is located between the intake manifold runners for cylinders 2 and 3. It has a light blue connector on the sensor. The NTC sensor tells the ECU how rich to make the fuel-air mixture based on the engine temperature. Do a site search for NTC sensor. There are a few posts on the resistance it should have at various temperatures/
- Bad ECU (not common in '88s).
- Bad or missing thermostat. If it stays open, the engine temperature never gets up to the required range.
