Last year I had the R12 to R-134A A/C conversion performed on my '89 900S (cost ~ $300). The air blew SO cold! I was really impressed because I had read here of the lack of 'coldness' after the conversion. The setup performed great all through the hot summer and fall. When they first completed the upgrade (because my A/C had died a year after a $150 R12 recharge), they pointed out to me that there was a strange 'whine/hum' coming from the compressor, specifically, they presumed, the compressor pulley and warned that it may need to be replaced, though they couldn't estimate how much time it had to 'live'.
As I said above, the A/C blew cold well into the fall until I needed it no more. Within the last couple of weeks, the temperature jumped up for a couple of days and when I fired up the A/C, the unit did engage, however the air never became cold. When I had the upgrade performed, the shop DID inject dye into the system and tested and found no leaks.
Now, I do know (I think) that if there was a leak, the compressor would loose pressure and not engage at all. Correct? What could be additional causes of the systems inability to blow cold air??
I thank all in advance for any assistance that can be provided!
Sincerely,
Barry

FYI-
I have had literally several thousand dollars of work performed on 'my baby' in the last 4 years (almost 6K). The shop I fathfully use is Blagois in Columbus, OH. For any central Ohio readers out there: you should be using these guys for your repairs. Very honest, knowledgeable, and fair. Example: Water pump replacement - $433 at ProCare vs. $170 at Blagois. Also, Blagois' SAAB tech ('Turbo') has over 20 years experience with SAABs. By the way, Blagois was recommended my a user HERE, so to whomever - 'Thank you!'
