Not sure what you mean by inspection - do you mean the private service your mechanic offers to you, or do you mean some government mandated vehicle safety inspection?
Regardless, if the outer CV joint boot splits open, the grease it retails will fling out onto the wheel rim, and various nearby parts of the suspension. This needs to be fixed promptly, because eventually the joint will go dry, and dirt will get into the joint and destroy it.
Not sure what mechanics charge to repair this. Does this sound like what the mechanic was referring to?
