It might be that the pilot bearing is getting dry after years of use. After a few hours on the road, it will heat up more than normal and drag when the clutch pedal is down, transmitting some extra flywheel rotation through the primary shaft.
I've seen quite a few pilot bearings that have either siezed or don't turn easily.
When was the last time you had the clutch replaced? (Changing the pilot bearing should be a normal part of clutch replacement.)
Of course, the foot on the clutch pedal all the time isn't necessarily a good thing, either.
She might want to learn the practise of touching another gear before putting it into reverse once the car has stopped.
