My '84 Turbo (191,000 miles) has developed a slight symptom -- at low RPM, the engine speed will ebb and flow randomly on a timescale of a second or two. If I'm idling at, say, 800 RPM, it will suddenly go up to maybe 900 for a half second, then go back down. A second or two later the same thing happens, but the precise interval is apparently random, not periodic. Also, the speed seems to fluctuate only between two discrete values; it doesn't wander.

When I'm actually driving, if I'm trying to maintain a constant, low speed (say, 20 or 30 mph) I notice a slight jerkiness on about the same timescale. It's always been a little jerky at low speeds, especially in first (duh), but it feels a little different now. Has anyone else had this happen? Is it just a slow aging effect, or perhaps a bad piece of electronics?
