I was unable to purchase the one townsend recommends...8239590481D is a bad number according to the VW dealer, so I got
part number 191-959-481-B and the seal N-043-808-3, both listed at $44.61 total.
The electrical contacts normally utilize a plug from the Rabbit wiring harness but the female lugs on my 87 900 plug onto the thermoswitch spade terminals with out any trouble.
I believe the degree C range is 94-87, considerably lower than the stock Saab 97-03 (97-103 degrees C) range. Keeps the radiator cooler so the block thermostat maintains a more uniform engine temperature.
My thermoswitch failed open...not so good when it comes to overheating but at didn't kill the battery as it would if the switch failed closed. (87 Car has had the timer relay eliminated, later cars don't have the relay to begin with).
Now I have to figure out how to get the new thermoswitch in without completely removing the radiator to get a socket on the thermoswitch. It looks like I can do it by removing the hood and the driver's side hood mounting bracket or at worst just removing the fans and moving the radiator up a few inches to clear some ductwork. Another morning or afternoon project.
