In addition to Randy's comments, I'd also check the ground cable between the alternator and the body. After a decade or so of road vibraion it can easily have been flexed so many times that it has a number of broken strands. If the cross-section of the cable has been reduced like that, it reduces the current-carrying capacity of the cable so the battery can never be fully recharged from long periods of running with lights, fans, A/C etc., etc. ... not to mention the current draw from starting the engine.
An easy test is to start the car, have somebody hold it at 2500 or so RPM, and turn on the lights and all of the accessories. Check the voltage between the alternator case and the negative post of the battery. If there's more than 1/2 volts, the ground cable is faulty.
