I've had this problem on my 84 900t and to a lesser extent on my 87 900t.
The 84 stopped working entirely and when I disassembled the mechanism it was dry and had that salted aluminum corrosion on it. I polished it up, lubed it with waterproof synthetic grease and never had another problem with it.
When I bought the 87 used I lubed it with the same grease before it corroded and haven't had any problems.
The rear latch works on a blocker principle...the electric lock puts a block or removes a block from the rear outside latch bar so the outside latch bar won't operate the latch mechanism. It's easy to see how it works once you remove the rear hatch inner covering.
If the latch mechanism is corroded you're probably best off removing the entire mechanism and cleaning it up rather than squirting with WD40 or oil which will just wash out in time.
