While I hate this job, it is very satisfying when the crankbolt breaks loose. One step up from steering racks on the ugly scale.
If you don't want to get under the car and use the starter to loosen the bolt and go through multiple socket falling off the bolt head tries, you can loosen it from above. The trick is to jam a big screwdriver into the flywheel teeth right near the starter. Just remove a bolt or two from the clutch cover and pry back the cover to get to the flywheel teeth. Then you can hold the screwdriver while you pull hard on the bolt with your breaker bar(better with a helper to hole the screwdriver whole you pull on bhe breaker). The flywheel can also be locked from the flywheel inspection hole under the car, but to do this you need a helper or a makeshift solution to clamp the screwdriver to the housing.
Also, it is easier to get at the crankbolt head if you remove the A/C drive pulley first(10mm bolts can be removed with a 3/8 or 1/4 drive ratchet). If you do this first, you might even be able to use a normal socket on the crankbolt, without having to dremel off 1/4" from the socket to get clearance.
While sobstory's price on the balancer perhaps was a bit higher, you didn't go away without getting the oil pump seal. Jim's coaching is often invaluable, if you ask for help.
