I owned an 84 900T from January 84 to March 92 or so when it was totalled at 190K miles.
I had to replace the OEM trans with a rebuilt trans at 88K when the pinion bearing lost it's preload due to cracked bearing bracket cap or somesuch. I used amsoil 75-90 gear oil on the new trans for the entire 88-188 stretch...I changed it at 20K intervals and had zero metal chips/swarf, etc. on the magnetic drain plug after the first oil change. Car was used in NE USA ski country, from Killington at -30F to PA, and in/around Washington DC at 105F. Rebuilt transmission shifted better than the OEM trans.
So if you're talking about an 84-era manual transmission, I'd be inclined to use the synthetic gear oil rather than the motor oil. Maybe the Honda and MTL is sufficient, YMMV.
