Last spring I had some idle problems and cleaning out the AIC valve seemed to take care of it. Well spring is here again and I was having similar problems: car starts fine, then idles at like 12-1900 rpm. After driving sometimes it would idle normal sometimes it woud stay the same, etc. Usually after being on the highway at cruising speed and stopping it would stay at 1100-2000 rpm depending. Sometimes it would idle normal or sometimes at 1k. Really annoying.
So, I cleaned out the AIC valve with carb cleaner and it actually seemed to get worse. So then I read a good thing to do was carb cleaner and then some WD-40. So I did that. It appears to have worked (although I am still seeing 1k idle after highway sometimes, but not major). The problem is now when I start the car I'm initially getting the wandering idle and it's bad enough that when it idles up and come back down the car is totally stalling. So, I'm stuck having to hold the throttle above 1500 or so for a few seconds and then it won't die. If I don't I can restart it as much as I want and it will keep dying. Once I drive for a couple seconds it's fine and for a long time until the car sits again either over night or while I'm at work. Does an AIC valve eventually just go so bad you need to get a new one? I see they are $120+ online (ouch). If I need one, I need one, but is something else to blame? I've searched as much as I can for a vacuum leak under the hood, but perhaps I need to pull my Bentley manual out and systematically go over each and every one. I haven't tested my turbo's 'hooter' valve to see if it holds boost. I do remember last summer when I was doing some work in the dash, the line for the highest setting on the heater came lose at the base way down low in the dash and it was dark and I couldn't get to it. Would this vacuum leak be a problem or does it need to be under the hood? If so I have to figure out how to even get to this connection. It's like way forward in the dash near the passenger's feet.
Any suggestions on how I can finally beat this idle problem? I might add that it seemed to really start doing this after I had an oil change and whole bunch of stuff done to it. It was all done by my vary good mechanic. I think I might end up calling him and seeing if he can take care of it. Before that though I'd like to try and take care of it myself. Thanks.
