Main seal / oil pump O-ring Posted by Ari [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Oil leaking main pully 2 litre engine, torben, Mon, 12 May 2003 09:08:15 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Right behind the main pulley (aka 'harmonic balancer') is the front main seal. Yes, I know it's in the back, but the engine is backwards in the 900. It's about a 75% chance that the main seal is leaking. The remaining 25% is the Oil pump O-ring. The crankshaft comes out of the engine, and runs right through the middle of the oil pump. THe oil pump O-ring seals the oil pump to the timing chain cover. The main seal sits in the oil pump.
Replacement isn't fun, but you don't have to remove the engine. You remove the belts, then the bolt holding the main pulley on, then pop the main pulley off. You then pull the main seal out and pop in a new one. The best bet is to simply remove the oil pump (a few bolts), and replace the O-ring and main seal all at once.
The only difficult parts are (1) getting the bolt out - you need a really short socket, and (2) working under the car sucks.
Townsend imports has a really nice writeup on this -

Sometimes the Townsend server is down, so be patient.
