Lower the backseat and crawl into the back. The latch at the bottom of the door can be popped with a screwdriver easily....just give it an easy push towards the door and the hatch will open.
Now take out all the speed screws from the interior padding on the hatch and pull on the top part to get it away from the door. Don't worry, it won't break, although you have to give it a good tug. Inside the hatch you will see a black plastic box. This contains the latching mechanism. Remove the metal peice that holds the cover on. BE CAREFUL to not let it drop down into the hatch. Trust me. Once that cover is off play with the hatch release button and you will see how it is supposed to work. The slide gets caught and can't get back over. Adjust and lube everything but....don't put it all back together until you try it out a bunch of times. Trust me again. Lock and unlock it until you're sure it isn't going to slip again. Then reassemble. Easy fix to annoying problem.
