headlight assembly help needed

Just purchased a 1993 900S. Headlights were loose. Found that the adjusting screws on the assembly frame were OK, but the white inserts in the 3 black cylindrical tubes that screw onto each headlight lense were broken. I've replaced the white inserts, but can not get the adjusting screws to snap back into the inserts, which as you know is necessary to hold the lense in the assembly which is then attached to the vehicle. I'd appreciate any advice. A couple of questions. In trying to force the adjusting screws into the white inserts, which are already in the black cylinders fastened to the headlight lense, I've broken the cylinder. How much force should it take. Do you push from the lense or the assembly. I've also lubricated the screws and cylinder receptical. Should the adjusting screws be in or out when trying to join them with the assembly piece. Thanks.
