Spark plugs or headgasket?... or something else?

All of a sudden, when I cranked it up yesterday, it had a rough start - like running in 3 cylinders, maybe? I crancked it up again, and after 5-10 seconds it was running smooth. After the trip, I started it again, 3 hours later. It almost failed to start. I tried again, and it was running in 3 cylinders for 5-10 seconds, and then smooth.
I had problems this winter with the coolant system. I suspected the head gasket, but after my mechanic did some long pressure tests, he ruled that out. It turned out that there were only loose coolant hoses.
Now, here are some questions:
1) In case of a blown head gasket, can coolant spill into the cylinder so fast (within 1-3 hours)? (I'm asking because I've read sometime that it takes a whole night to feel it).
2) If it's a spark plug, shouldn't it run in 3 cylinders all the time?
3) If it's not the headgasket nor the spark plugs, what could it be?
