AC compressor questions (somewhat long)

I dont get cold air when I turn the AC on anymore. However, the compressor still cycles, so I am trying to figure out how to proceed.
When I watch the compressor cycle, it spins clockwise when the clutch is engaged. When it stops, it tends to sporadically rotate fractions of a turn (10-20 degrees per twitch) in the opposite direction, until it reengages. It sorta chirps a little when it starts or stops (which i assume is the electric clutch).
I think the pressure must be low, but not low enough so the low pressure switch cuts the system off. I am planning on buying a pressure guage to test this, but don't yet know what kind of guage to get, or where to connect it (I know the low pressure side of compressor, but i dont know what the connector looks like, or where it is)
From what ive read, the system can leak from holes in hoses, or at connectors, and should leave an oily residue. The engine being quite old, and rather dirty, its hard to tell if there is any of this tell-tale oil. If I do a conversion, should i just replace all of the hoses, or is there a way to determine which ones are good, and which arent?
any help/comments on any of the questions raised is appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Dave
