Periodical/intermittent easy braking and severe shaking

Lately my otherwise powerfull SAAB 900i (8v, 5 door, 1990 model) has been loosing horsepowers to a periodically appearing resistance working on the front wheel(s). It is clearly felt while accelerating, and working hard, a short while after reaching 65-80 mph, shaking sets in. This shaking is also very clearly felt through the entire steering column, knocking my hand on the steeringwheel, and feeling as a severe imbalance in the front wheels (- wheels are perfectly balanced!), not nice. Reducing speed does little to eliminate the shaking, so it is not a matter of “resonance” shaking - shaking follows all the way down to say 30 mph. If after such an episode staying below say 40-50 mph, no shaking is felt, but the braking/resistance often persists for a while/some miles, stealing engine power.
Initially I though it all had to do with “hanging brakes”, but this could never explain the speed dependent shaking….? And, two days ago I did take the front brake calipers apart, rinsed the sliding pins and greased it all generously using cupper grease. To no avail. And, there were no signs of extra wear on the pads or the brake discs, or on the calipers for that matter. So, I no longer believe this resistance/shaking problem can be localized to one or both of the frontbrakes. But, what can it be then? Is it simply time for a front wheel hubs replacement
Thanks for any input here - I realize it may be a tricky one.....
